Headway HE1 Range
The latest advance in
on-board piezo technology, featuring dual concentric pots and a
360º cable...
The HE1 RANGE IS THE latest model in
Headway's excellent preamp and pickup system catalogue. Boasting
an increased output balanced with controls that possess a
smoother and wider sweep, this particular option features two
on-board dual concentric pots. In this case it's been fitted to
a Hathaway Standard acoustic from British luthier Paul Hathaway.
And remember, of course, that a significant amount of work to
your own guitar would be required, including drilling two holes
in the instrument's rim to cater for the control pots.
New features to the pickup also include what Headway describe as
'Class A' components and tone circuits, designed to add
authentic warmth and clarity to proceedings and a polarised 360º
piezo cable - just what's required to reproduce every tonal
nuance.
With as involved an EQ system as I've ever encountered -
including treble shelving, guitar-specific shaping and more
positive centre detents - there's no excuse whatsoever for not
getting an awesome acoustic tone. |
The
Hathaway could have done with a restringing before testing, but
I thought its dull acoustic tone would be a good test for the
Headway. On plugging in, the guitar was transformed and even
though a description of the EQ's operation reads like a physics
paper, it takes no time to obtain a simply wonderful
electro-tone.
There's a minimum of squeaks and body rubs, while the entire
tonal spectrum shimmers. Of course, with a new set of strings,
the guitar blooms, while the performance of the Headway goes
into warp drive with the merest re-setting of the EQ.
It's not cheap and for good reason - if you're in any doubt as
to the quality of Headway pickups and the HE1/G2C in particular,
don't be. It's truly excellent at every turn.
