Headway - The Art of Sound!

PIEZO CABLE PICKUP ADHERED TO BRIDGE SIDE

Hello John,

I mounted the "snake" against the bridge with simple foam adhesive tape, which worked surprisingly well on the first try!

I was very pleased with the spectrum of sound compared to my Schaller pick-ups and my small mike-style pickup. I used it for six separate performances indoors and outdoors - experiencing no feedback - and felt the instrument projecting without any annoying distortion or spotty amplifications. The overall even sound was definitely better than I had experienced before.

I have already gathered some interest in this simpler way of mounting and have passed it by other musicians at the studio.

I am very pleased. Thanks again.

"After searching for years I believe I have now found the best acoustic pick up yet. These Headways are fantastic".

Erno Galambos (GT Production, Hungary)

"We fitted HE1 system to my Guild which is used for "open D" tunings. I played it in concert in a small club yesterday. There is not more to say than it has EXCELLENT SOUND I have never heard before.

It had not had any correction with EQ on mixing console, except to cut High freq by -3-4 dB. All the customers who have chosen Headway are really satisfied with your pickup systems."

Thomas Kleemier (Pro Guitar Player)

"I already played the first concerts with the new pickup and it works great!!! Who was the Swiss guy???"

Daniel Gasque

"I really appreciate the care which I seldom experience with companies, even with those in which I have friends in my own country.
Best regards."

Chris Janman

"I am very happy with the performance of the amp . To be perfectly honest i bought the Shire King SK120 amp to play jazz with, currently using a Gibson 175 and Strat, the clean tones are amazing . My trio play small venues so i make sure not to overdrive it, any larger and outdoor gigs i will put it through a p.a. I,m hoping to return to fingerstyle acoustic music sometime in the future, when i will already be set up with the perfect amp. After lugging around a Fender Blues Deluxe, superseeded by a Hot Rod Deluxe for about 6 years ( both bought new and started playing up after 24 months ! ) my back certainly feels the benefit...... Thanks, Chris Janman Micky & Chris "

"I used "The Band" pick ups Yesterday, for recording a new disc. Despite the fact that the studio we used was small and we played two violins at the same time using "The Band" - I am glad to say that their quality was as expected - clear sound, no interference."

Carl Tosten

"I installed a Snake2 in my guitar and it sounds wonderful. You can see and hear me at www.carltosten.com "

"Wow! It is superb!! The amplified sound using the Snake is spot on. Thanks!"

"Many, many thanks for the pickup, very much appreciated by me and even more so by the guitar's owner. Keep up the good work.
PS: I like the new brochure and the new lines. Will be trying the new inline jack socket preamp one soon."

Soren Korsgard, Denmark

"... the band name is TV2 (www.tv-2.dk) they are the biggest name in Denmark and are touring for the rest of the summer and again in the winter.
The lead singer Steffen Brand was totally excited about your system. He had tried Sunrise and LR Baggs, but ended up preferring your system. He didn´t know it, but I showed it to him and he was blown away and asked if he could get the system in his guitar."

David Henderson

"Thanks for the 'The Band' [violin pickup]. At last, the sound of the instrument! I'm thinking of selling my Fender electric fiddle now. I've had "The Band" since April. My current group is still rehearsing, aiming to start playing gigs in the autumn. Even the Bass Player commented on the sound! We don't have a drummer yet, so I can't comment of the reaction of others.
Looking forward to a long and happy association with the pickup."    David

Once again, many thanks for your speedy assistance - we have been very
impressed with "The Band" [violin pickup] - sounds great!

A WARNING ON USING HEADWAY PICKUPS AT LIVE GIGS!

I backed a band in a Live Soul jam session, using it straight into the desk. I played some gentle Latin licks and was not swamped by the electric guitar solos. My nylon strung guitar remained an individual acoustic sound in amongst that electric mire, lovely and loud, no feedback.

Unfortunately, my guitar was nicked outside Bar Italia in Soho, London on 30th December.

Someone in the crowd was probably so impressed with the sound, I got followed from the club I was playing. So I would issue a warning! If you're using a Headway, people will go to desperate ends once they've heard its reproduction.

Go straight home, don't stop for coffee!

Fylde Oberon with HE1/G2 FEQ

I have just bought a Fylde Oberon, and Roger Bucknall fitted the HE1/G2 FEQ for me.

The first time that I recorded with it, we just plugged it direct into the desk; based on experience with previous transducer systems, we rolled off a bit of mid-range.

We then just set everything on the mixing desk flat and the results were even better! I'll definitely be asking for the spilt bridge version for my McIlroy at some future date.

Pickard Acoustic with Headway Pickup

"Just to let you know that I've finally installed the pick-up in my guitar ( that is the original Pickard Acoustic - now 20 years old) and I am VERY impressed with the sound. Very clear with excellent string to string separation and faithful to the unamplified sound. I should be happy to recommend these pick-ups to any acoustic guitarist." - Ivor, Pickard Acoustics http://www.pickardacoustics.com/

"I have the Snake acoustic pickup fitted to my guitar and share Paula and Louise's opinion that it is a fantastic product."

- Robin Douglas  www.rooben.com

"I don't tour much these days as I don't have the time (which is fine, I can cherry pick my gigs!) but I still like to sound good! Just about everyone who hears me play remarks on the acoustic sound I get; and believe me, its not my wondrous playing! I'm more of a singer than a player.

My guitar is nice in itself, but I've been searching for the Holy Grail of Acoustic Sound for over 30 years, and I know what it is that makes it sound so good!

I sing the praises of Headway pickups loud and long to anyone who's interested. Thanks for making me sound considerably better than I really am!

Errol Walsh.

"It's not very often I write emails like this but I just wanted to congratulate you on the quality of the split Dobro transducer I recently had fitted to my Regal RD45 (Alan Marshall - Luthier). Absolutely gorgeous tone, zero feedback and absolute consistency of gain and tone across the strings. I own a second Dobro (a Lebeda) that cost considerably more than the Regal so, to avoid the extra work and cutting into the body (I had an external battery box fitted to the regal) I bought an active Fishman transducer which I have fitted myself. My intention was to use the dobros side by side through an A/B box......NO CHANCE. The Fishman just sounds AWFUL compared to the Headway, even though the Headway is fitted to a guitar costing £700 less!

The fitting of the pickup has allowed me to play in a way never experienced before. Close micing nearly always meant playing hard to make sure you could force enough signal down the mic - this often resulted in clumsy playing and a harsh sound. Now even the smallest rakes cut through and even the softest notes sing sweet.

Thanks again (an order for another pickup will be forthcoming.........and a Fishman will be on eBay!)"

"The Headway Snake brings out my Martin D-16's personality much more than anything else I've ever tried out, and furthermore it is reliable and very easy to work with on stage with Zar."

Steáfán Hannigan

"A few years ago I picked up a tenor guitar and was playing it acoustically. It was practically impossible to mic up with a result I stopped playing it for a few years. Recently I acquired a Headway Pickup system and installed it. I can't believe the difference it has made to my playing. It gives me exactly the sound quality I need and the ability to control that sound precisely. Engineers I work with enthuse wildly about it and I am now playing the tenor guitar at practically every gig because of the Headway Pickup.
When I meet people who ask me about your system I just wish I had cards to give out with your details. My other Headway Pickup is still going great and was one of the first ones you ever made. It's on my Stefan Sobell octave mandola. Please feel free to use my name in any way to endorse your product."

Rik Barron, Mandolin in Newfoundland

"I forgot to answer the question on the octave mandolin the other day. The pickup and instrument work great. Clear and easy to play."

Comment on "The Band" for Violin

"I was very impressed by the quality of output. I don't think I've ever heard a more accurate acoustic sound coming out of a piezo."
 - Arthur Marshall.

Gavin Davenport: "Crucible" & "Hekety" bands

"Just wanted to say thank you for a splendid pickup. I play guitar and cittern in bands called Crucible and Hekety. I recently commissioned Kai Toenjes to build me a new cittern, to which he fitted a custom under saddle pickup made by yourselves.
I have to confess I was a bit sceptical about under saddle pickups having had the thin piezo sound in the past, but the amazing natural sound of the Headway blew me away, totally incredible and I'm very pleased. I've tried it D.I'd straight to the desk and through my AER amp, and it just sounds like the instrument either way; I can't imagine anything much better than that.
Thanks again."

Mooncoyn Ceilidh Band

Many thanks for the prompt return of my pickup. As mentioned, I have Headway pickups in my Neil Brook instruments and in my Fylde Mandola, and have always been tremendously impressed with performance. On hearing the sound out of my Neil Brook guitar, one of the other members of our Mooncoyn Ceilidh Band has now changed to Headway pickups, and others lust after them!

Not only are the pickups second to none, your after sales service matches their performance. My original pickup, now six years old developed what might be termed a "musician induced fault"! Following our phone call I sent it back to you, and received it back within a couple of days at extremely modest cost. Cost and timing both critical to a gigging musician.
Many thanks and keep up the good work.
Rick Wiggans, Mooncoyn Ceilidh Band.

Cittern with Headway Pickup

We played in Oxford on Saturday night, and we had several people come up and compliment me on the Cittern - both looks and sound - it worked really well through the PA (D.I. with a little AER compact 60 amp so I could hear it on stage).

I'm amazed at how good the pickup is. Everyone in the band was very taken with what the instrument added to the sound after my numerous flat top instruments - it is unbelievably punchy, a very nice, tight sound, but lots of sustain as well.

Comment on 'Snake 2' pickup:

"We would like to be the Headway authorised distributor in Poland. 'The Snake's sound is really amazing (especially after comparing with
Fishman and B-Band pickups, which I did yesterday)." - Jacek. www.altonex.com (Poland).

Martin D28 with HE1

"I thought you might like to know I am using your HE1 external system on my Martin D28. Our band Brothers Falloon is here: www.brothersfalloon.com
- Pete Falloon.

"It was actually the first time I installed Headway pickup on a guitar. I find it works excellent, open and direct.

I received two of your pickups from a guy who writes in music magazines. His name is Søren Korsgaard.

My use of this kind of pickups is limited, maybe about 25 pieces in a year. The last few years I have mostly used Fishman systems. I could hear your system was clearly better."

Johnny Morch, Morch Guitars, Denmark.

"Hi John, I finally test the HE2/G.FEQ with a great PA system and it sounds great. Very natural tone, rich in bass, well balance in the mid range, and the trebles sounds fat and clear, not like the normal piezo that sounds weak and very electric. It is not changing the colour of the acoustic sound and only with a reverb and a little compression is the closest sound to unplugged, I ever found for an acoustic guitar. Thank you and congratulations for your good product."

I have heard great things about your stuff......also I am currently building a Voyage-air for Thom Bresh and he has listed your system as one of his choices.

Hello, Mr. John Littler! I just saw your website (I enjoyed it), hope your business is improving, I really think you deserve it, yours are probably the best pickups ever made. The Snakes I bought from you are both still on duty, doing a great job..................

Dear John

Just to say the HE1/G2 NYL pick up is now installed and superb and very musically empowering. Happy New year and wishing you every success in 2007.

Andrew Cooke, Madagascar

Hi there,

I've just had one of your Snake pickups fitted by Paul Tonberg in Inverness, to my Thomas Buchanan mandolin, and I think it's the dog's b*ll*cks - brilliant balance between bass and treble. I have other mandolins fitted with Fishman and LR Baggs pickups, and this one beats all-comers.

Thanks

Bob Massie
